Moderate quake hit Myanmar

A moderate earthquake of magnitude 5.1 Richter Scale with its epicenter inside Myanmar on March 13, announced the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

“There are small jolts nearby and it is near with Kabaw Fault. Slight and moderate quakes hit five or six times a month mostly,” said Dr Kyaw Moe Oo, Director General of the DMH.

The quake hit about 11 miles southwest of Kalay, latitude 23.07°N, longitude 93.92°E, depth 49 kilometers, about 36 miles northeast of Hakha seismological observatory was recorded March 13, 2019, announced the DMH.

“Some people from Kalay knew about the quake and some don’t know. People lived in southwest of Kalay felt the jolts noticeably,” said a local.

Myanmar is located on Sagaing, Kyaukkyan, Kabaw and Kalartan faults and the danger of earthquake is one of natural disasters faced by Myanmar. A total of 76 people were died in a 6.8 Richter Scale quake which hit eastern Shan State in 2011 and a major quake of 6.8 Richter Scale which hit near Thabeikkyin killed 26 people and damaged houses and ancient buildings.

“When the quake hit, I am at upstairs. I felt the jolt and thought if the quake hit more, the house will be collapsed. The jolt only lasted for about 30 seconds,” said a local from Myohla Village.
