Government collapses in the Netherlands : Geert Wilders’ PVV party breaks coalition

The Hague, Netherlands – The nationalist Party for Freedom (PVV) in the Netherlands has announced its withdrawal from the coalition. This has led to the collapse of the coalition Government in the Netherlands. Geert Wilders, the leader of the PVV party, said, “All ministers in my party are going to resign.”

This Government lasted only 11 months. The PVV is the largest party in the Netherlands.

1. A coalition Government was formed in the Netherlands in July 2024. Geert Wilders himself did not hold any position in the Government. He said that the coalition Government was not formulating a strict policy on the refugee crisis. Therefore, he has decided to leave the coalition.

2. Geert Wilders presented the Government with a 10-point plan, which included tough measures such as not allowing refugees into the country, deporting refugees from Syria, deploying troops on the borders, and closing refugee centers. He warned that if this was not agreed, he would leave the Government.

3. Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said that breaking the coalition is an unnecessary and irresponsible step.

4. Dylan Yesilgoz, leader of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, said that the Prime Minister had called on all leaders to exercise restraint amid the threat of war and economic crisis in Europe; but Geert Wilders left the coalition within minutes of the meeting.
