The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has condemned in the strongest terms the latest Israeli act of aggression against multiple locations across Iran, which has resulted in the death of top brass military commanders, nuclear scientists, as well as ordinay citizens.
The Eurasian politico-economic bloc, in a statement released on Saturday, expressed serious concern over the escalating tensions in the West Asia region and strongly condemned the military strikes carried out by Israel against Iranian territory in the early hours of June 13.
“Such aggressive actions against civilian targets, including energy and transport infrastructure, which have resulted in civilian casualties, are a gross violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
“They constitute an infringement on Iran’s sovereignty, cause damage to regional and international security, and pose serious risks to global peace and stability,” the intergovernmental organization pointed out.
The SCO went on to emphasize that its member states firmly advocate for the resolution of disputes over Iran's civilian nuclear energy program exclusively through peaceful, political, and diplomatic means.
The regional organization also extended its sincere condolences to the people and government of the Islamic Republic of Iran over the deaths of senior military officials, nuclear scientists, and innocent civilians as a result of deadly Israeli attacks.
“The SCO member states, strictly adhering to the principles and norms of the UN Charter and the SCO Charter, consider any unlawful actions directed against SCO member states unacceptable and reaffirm their unwavering commitment to strengthening international peace and security,” the SCO stated.
Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, IRGC Commander Major General Hossein Salami, Commander of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbia Central Headquarters Major General Gholam Ali Rashid, and six nuclear scientists, including Mohammad Mahdi Tehranchi and Fereydoon Abbasi, have also been martyred in the Israeli strikes.
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has warned the Zionist regime that it will receive a severe punishment for the strike, saying, “With this crime, the Zionist regime has prepared for itself a bitter, painful fate, which it will definitely see.”
The SCO, which has its headquarters in China, is the world's largest regional organization in terms of area and population.
It has nine member states, namely, Iran, China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
In July 2023, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization officially approved Iran's full-fledged membership in the organization.
The SCO is one of the world’s largest regional organizations, accounting for around one-third of the global Gross domestic product (GDP), roughly 40 percent of the world’s population, and nearly two-thirds of the entire Eurasian landmass.
